Award-winning writers and teachers are set to judge the first tier of the 2014 Golden Nib writing contest, sponsored by Write by the Rails, Prince William County’s chapter of the Virginia Writers Club. Entries are due July 31 and first-place winners elevate to the state-level competition.
Prince William Today/InsideNoVa. Sports Editor David Fawcett will judge non-fiction entries. His awards include 2013 Virginia Press Association’s first place for feature writing portfolio, second place for feature writing story and first place for sports writing portfolio. He’s has been recognized 20 times by the Virginia Press Association, the Associated Press Sports Editors and the Local Media Association for his writing and he’s covered Prince William County for 25 years.
Fiction entries will be judged by Osbourn High School’s Ann Marie Stippey, English teacher with Manassas City Public Schools for 10 years and the 2014 Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher of the Year.
Recently named Prince William County Poets Laureate Dr. Robert Scott of Haymarket and Alexandra “Zan” Hailey of Manassas will co-judge poetry entries. Scott is a novelist, poet and English teacher at Osbourn Park High School and Hailey is an undergraduate at Virginia Commonwealth University.
The chapter deadline for Golden Nib is midnight, July 31 and—new this year—submissions will be required in email format in addition to paper format. Also new this year: Entries published in your personal blogs now qualify for consideration.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Gazing Grain Press feminist chapbook contest
About: An inclusive feminist poetry & hybrid chapbook contest edited by George Mason University MFA alumni and sponsored by the Fall for the Book literary
festival. This contest is open to feminists of all genders and
sexualities and is meant to promote socially conscious poetry and hybrid
writing to a wide audience. We adhere to no one “definition” of
feminism—we encourage a broad and diverse range of approaches. Challenge
us!
Reading Period: March 15-June 1, 2014.
Prize: Publication,
10% of print run, and invitation to read at the 2014 Fall for the Book
literary festival in Fairfax, VA (accommodation and travel within the
continental United States will be paid).
Runners-up
and/or designated finalists will also be invited to receive recognition
at the event. Contest finalists will be considered for publication in
the Gazing Grain Press miniature series of limited-run, handmade artist books.

1. This competition is open to all poets writing in English who have no affiliation with the judge, the editors, or the George Mason University MFA program.
2.
The author’s name should not appear anywhere in the manuscript itself.
Include identifying information only where it is asked for in the submit
form. Editors will read submissions blind.
3.
Manuscripts must be between 15 and 25 pages (not including front and
back matter), numbered accordingly, with only one poem per page. Every
manuscript should include a title page, a table of contents, and an
acknowledgements page, if applicable.
4.
The manuscript should not have been previously published in any
complete form; however, previously published individual poems are
acceptable. We also accept simultaneous submissions. Notify us
immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. Multiple submissions are
accepted, with a separate reading fee for each manuscript.
6.
The winner will be selected in early July, and the book will be
published in September. The winner will be honored with a reading and
reception at the Fall for the Book literary festival in Fairfax, VA
(September 11 to 18, 2014).
Manuscripts are read by the editors, who will select a set of finalists to send to the judge for winner selection.

Nominations are now open for the first ever Prince William Poet Laureate, a two-year position to be selected and filled under an exciting new Laureate program of the Prince William County Arts Council. The program is being administered by a special committee of the Arts Council under the leadership of June Forte, a member of Write by the Rails, the Prince William Chapter of the Virginia Writers Club.

Speechless the Magazine will be publishing a feature on poems pertaining to Route 66—opened in 1926, decommissioned in 1985—the highway that gave rise to the country’s first franchise (Fred Harvey Restaurants), played a large (and long) role in the Great Depression, served as a corridor for people fleeing the Oklahoma Dust Bowl, and has been immortalized in the classic The Grapes of Wrath. They want strong, accomplished poems with interesting takes on the “Mother Road”.

Submission Guidelines for the Eleventh Annual Dogfish Head Poetry Prize
The Eleventh Annual Dogfish Head Poetry Prize for the winning book-length manuscript by a poet residing in the Mid-Atlantic states (DE, MD, VA, PA, NJ, NY, WVA, NC, and District of Columbia) will consist of $500, two cases of Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Beer*, book publication by Broadkill River Press, and 10 copies of the book (in lieu of royalties).
The rules are: Manuscripts must be received by midnight, September 2, 2013 (Labor Day). Manuscripts received after Labor Day will not be considered. Eligible poets must reside in the above listed states and be twenty-one years of age or older by the date of the award. * The manuscript is to be submitted electronically in one MS Word document attachment. Send to Prize co-ordinator Linda Blaskey at dogfishheadpoetryprize@earthlink.net. Snail mail submissions will not be accepted.
Send two title pages with each submission: one with the title of the manuscript, your name, address, phone numbers and e-mail address; the second with just the manuscript title. No manuscript is to have any author-identifying information other than the one title page and will be rejected if it does. The manuscript should have an acknowledgement page of poems previously published, and in which publications and/or web-sites they appeared. Judging is blind and double-tiered.
The manuscript must be book-length (between 48 and seventy eight pages of original work – no translations) and no more than roughly thirty lines to a page, including the poem’s title and two line-spaces between the title and the body of the poem. A poem may be more than one page. The book’s dimensions will be 8.5 inches by 5.5 inches, with a minimum of half-inch side margins, and printed in 12 point type, so avoid very long lines.
The award will be presented to the poet on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at the Dogfish Head Brewpub and Restaurant in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The winner must agree to attend this event and to read from their winning book at a reception honoring the winner. The prize will be officially awarded by Sam Calagione, Founder and CEO of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and Distillery, or by another company official.
The author of the winning manuscript also agrees to provide, within ten days of notification, a color head-shot photograph for the back cover and a dedication for the interior of the book. The winner agrees to travel to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware at the winner’s expense for awarding of the prize. Dogfish Head will provide the winner one night’s lodging in Rehoboth Beach where Dogfish Rehoboth Brew Pub and Restaurant is located.
Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales retains the right to use any of the winning work in promotional materials.

Gazing Grain Press Chapbook Contest
Gazing Grain Press, an independent publisher founded by alumni of George Mason University’s MFA creative writing program and sponsored by Fall for the Book, is currently accepting submissions for its second annual chapbook contest. Gazing Grain seeks poetry and hybrid manuscripts that explore “ideas of identities as connected to gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity, culture, and ability,” according to the press’s website. “This contest is open to feminists of all genders and sexualities and is meant to promote socially conscious poetry and hybrid writing to a wide audience. We adhere to no one ‘definition’ of feminism—we encourage a broad and diverse range of approaches. Challenge us!”
Manuscripts should be 15-25 pages, and the winner receives publication, contributor’s copies, and an invitation to read at the upcoming Fall for the Book Festival, September 22-27, 2013 (airfare and accommodations included). Judges for First Tier of Golden Nib Contest Announced; Deadline is July 15

(VWC) announces the call for submissions for the first tier of VWC’s
Golden Nib Writing Contest.
Fiction, non-fiction and poetry entries are due July 15 and will be judged by a first-tier panel that includes Lillian Orlich, Osbourn Park High School guidance counselor who is completing 60 years of service in Prince William County Public Schools; Kari Pugh, Editor, Prince William Today, Northern Virginia Media Services; and Sofia Starnes, current Poet Laureate of Virginia.
About the VWC Golden Nib Writing Contest
The
Golden Nib is a two-tier writing competition. Entries are submitted and
judged at the VWC chapter level first. Each chapter submits only its
first-place winning entries for VWC statewide judging (second tier).
Entrants who live within the jurisdiction of a VWC chapter must enter
the first tier of the competition through that chapter. Residents living
in an area where no chapter exists must submit their entries to the
chapter located closest to them. First-place chapter winners must either
be a current member of the VWC or must join the VWC to advance to the
state-level competition – a membership application and payment of $15
first year dues must accompany the entry.
Write by the Rails Contest Rules
Write
by the Rails’ first tier contest rules mirror the VWC contest
requirements – further information on the state-level process is
available at: www.virginiawritersclub.org. Entries will be accepted in the categories of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Write by the Rails will recognize 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners in each category.
1.
Manuscripts must be the original, unpublished work of the entrant, and
must not have won a prize at any level in any other competition.
Submissions can come from entries published in your personal blogs.
Writing published in blogs other than your own or on social network
sites or in an online publication are ineligible and should not be
submitted.
2.
Entrants may submit one entry per category of fiction, non-fiction and
poetry. Fiction and non-fiction entries must be no longer than 3,500
words. Poetry entries must be no longer than 50 lines.
3. Format: Submissions not in accord with this format and other rules will be disqualified:
a. Detachable cover sheet including author’s name, address, telephone
number, email address (if available), category (fiction, non-fiction,
poetry), title of entry and word count.
b. All other pages must show contest category, title and page number in
the header. If the author’s name appears on any other page of the
manuscript, the entry will be disqualified.
c. Prose (fiction and non-fiction) manuscripts must be printed in a
plain and legible font, such as Times New Roman in 12-to 14- pitch.
Manuscripts must be printed on 8 ½ by 11-inch white paper,
double-spaced, with one-inch margins top, bottom and left, and a ragged
right margin.
d. Poetry manuscripts must be printed in a plain, legible font, such as
Times New Roman in 12- to 13-pitch, Manuscripts must be printed on 8 ½
by 11-inch white paper with 1-inch margins top and bottom.
4. Submissions must include an original and one copy of the manuscript.
5. VWC state-level awards are 1st Place, $100; 2nd Place, $50; and 3rd
Place, $25. State winning entries in each category will be published in
Portable Data File (*.pdf) format, on the VWC Web site. All other rights
remain the property of the author.
There
are ten VWC chapters in the state. Only first-place winners from the
chapters will be eligible for the state contest. That means only 30
entries will be forwarded for the State competition – 10 entries total
per category (fiction, non-fiction, poetry) – by the state deadline of
Sept. 3. Winners of State VWC Contest will be announced and awards
presented at the State VWC Annual Meeting on November 2.

Virginia Writers Club’s Summer Short Shorts Contest

Guidelines
· Only members of the statewide Virginia Writers Club who have paid their membership dues for 2013 may enter the contest.
· Entries, sent electronically, will be accepted from May 1 through June 30, 2013.
· A writer may submit only one entry per category.
· Entry must be the original unpublished work of the writer.
· Winners will be announced at the 3 August 2013 VWC Symposium in Charlottesville, followed by a posting of winners on the VWC website.
Format
· Entries must be in Times New Roman 12 sent as an e-mail attachment. Illustrations will not be accepted or considered.
· Prose must be double-spaced with a ragged right margin; poetry must be single-spaced with a flush left margin.
· No information identifiable to the author should be included in the body of the entry.
· The e-mail message to which the work is attached must include the title of the piece and category, the author's name, address, phone number, and e-mail address. An author's biography of no more than 50 words should be included in the e-mail message.
The e-mail should be sent to contest coordinator Gary Kessler at gdkess@mindspring.com. An acknowledgment of receipt will be sent; if you don’t receive one, recheck.
Entry constitutes permission to publish the winning essay in a future edition of a Virginia Writers Club publication or on the Virginia Writers Club website. Acceptance of the prize money constitutes waiver of any and all further compensation for first publication rights. Remaining rights are the property of the author. Authors retain all rights to non-winning entries.

| Hello everyone, I am honored to write my first president’s message for VWC E-nunciator. Please let me start by thanking June Forte for her leadership over the past couple of years. She’s left me with big shoes to fill -and many cool ideas on how to take our club to the next step. In December 2012, several members of the executive committee (Chuck Lumpkin, Linda Layne. Sara Robinson, June Forte and I) met to talk about what we need to do to drive our club ahead. We came up with a series of initiatives, which we immediately broke into committees. Yes, you guessed it. We need volunteers. Our committees are Communications (messaging, standardized look and feel, and standardized messaging for each chapter), Membership (fee analysis, retention analysis, chapter development, fee structure for affiliates/corporations, and membership category analysis), Web Site (affiliate/corporate marketing, calendar expansion, content editing, design evolution), Symposium (enrollment, annual theme, speaker acquisition, registration, registration table). We have several volunteers already but we need more. And we need some committee leaders, too. You don’t have to be a member of the Board of Governors to be either a task or committee leader. You have to be willing to volunteer to help out. Please raise your hands. We need everyone involved. Oh yes. We have one more committee that is totally empty. VWC will turn 100 in five years. We need to begin planning NOW to have a year-long series of events. Who can help??? Thanks again for entrusting leadership of the club to me. I will work my darnedest to live up to your expectations. | Appalachian Authors Guild Chapter
1.
Committee participation in the Appalachian Heritage Writers Symposium,
Southwest Virginia Community College, Richlands, Virginia, June 14 and
15, 2013. Keynote speaker will be Bob Inman, novelist, screenwriter, and
playwright. He is the author or four novels, seven screenplays with six
for motion pictures for television.
2. We are cooperating with a local bookstore owner, Bubbas, staffing an AAG/writer's information booth in the main auditorium and mini workshops on a variety of topics in break out rooms. Open to the public at Fun Fest, Sunday, July 14 at the Kingsport, VA Civic Center, noon to 6:00 PM 3. We will have a double booth at the Virginia Highlands Festival August 2 - 11.
Blue Ridge Writers Chapter
Accolades: We’ve just concluded two successful programs in the annual Virginia Festival of the Book, "The Magic of Words" and "Getting It Together: The Process and Power of Anthologies." Special thanks to all who helped in any way to ensure the success of these two programs. I’m quite proud of our accomplishments. We also achieved success in the publication of our fourth anthology, thanks to Linda Layne, the publisher; Gary Kessler, the volume editor; and all chapter members and others whose work fills the Anthology. We are off to a good start in promoting and selling the Anthology; sixteen copies were sold at "The Magic of Words." Future Meetings (1) Chapter member Deborah Prum and her sister Susan Lanterman, also a writer, will be guest speakers at our May 22nd meeting. (2) To further our commitment to promote and sell the 2013 Anthology, several additional member readings have been scheduled for May. Both of these events will be evening meetings. The May 1st reading will provide the program for the Friends of the Fluvanna County Library annual evening event. The second May reading will take place May 30th, when we will participate in the Jefferson-Madison Library’s Regional Authors Series. (3) Our June 26th monthly meeting again will be focused on readings from the Anthology. Additional readings will be scheduled later in the year. New Writing Contest - The Blue Ridge Writers Chapter "Winter Writing Contest" will be reinstated. This contest will take place in November - December 2013.

Hanover Writers Chapter is resurrecting the Hanover Book Festival and
is now in the planning process. The event will be the 2nd Saturday of
August at the Liberty School Activity Center in Mechanicsville, VA. To

In the meantime, our meetings continue to be held on the 3rd Tuesday of
each month at 6:30 PM at the Eastern Hanover Fire Station #3 in
Mechanicsville. Our April speaker is Web Designer Jason Jacobs.
Northern Virginia Writers Club The Northern Virginia Writers Club has enjoyed several interesting programs this year. Members Matt Iden, Karen Cantwell and Misha Crews discussed self-publishing in January and will give another presentation on "Marketing Your Digital Book" in April; Matt Watier discussed freelance art with an emphasis on artist/writer collaboration in February; and, club president Dorothy Hassan gave a seminar on dialogue in March. In May, member Art Taylor will provide a four-hour workshop on character and plot. Art is a fiction writer, book critic, assistant professor of English at George Mason University, and marketing director for the Fall for the Book Festival. A survey of our members was conducted by Vice President Karen Cantwell to find out what brought our members to the club and what they wanted the club to offer them, particularly in terms of programs. The most frequently requested programs were: digital publishing, publishers and agents as speakers, and craft workshops. Speaker: Distinguished Poet, Dr. Barry Amis. Salem Church Library, Spotsylvania County. Barry D. Amis is the Vice President of the Poetry Society of Virginia for the Northern Region. He is a Philadelphian and has degrees from Penn State, the University of Pennsylvania, Middlebury College, and Michigan State. He was professor of American and African American literature at Michigan State University and Purdue University. He was also a Fulbright professor of American Studies in France, Madagascar, Cameroon, and Niger. He lectured and conducted workshops for the United States Information Agency in more than two dozen countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. His poetry has appeared in a variety of journals and his volume Dust of the Ground is expected to come out later this year. Accolades: Larry Turner was chosen as featured poet in the upcoming newsletter of the Illinois State Poetry Society and his poem "Uncle Sam's Niece" was accepted for the April Voices on the Wind; for Jim Gaines, his short story translated from Alphonse Daudet, "The Lighthouse on Bloody Shoals" appeared in the April issue of The Arts and Entertainment Magazine and his poems "Dreaming in Right Field" (Baseball Bard, March), "The Mix" (The Weekly Avocet online 3/13/13), "The Path to Avalanche Lake" (Spring number of hardcover Avocet), "Memorial Day," "Valentine's Day," and "The Orphan's Birthday" (the latter three in April issue of Voices on the Wind) also appeared recently.
